The authentication and analysis of hadiths concerning Arabs
Abstract (EN)
This study focuses on the “takhrij” (tracing of sources) and analysis of narrations found in primary hadith sources that specifically concern the Arabs. Although Islam evaluates people based on faith and righteous deeds rather than lineage, tribe, or ethnicity, numerous narrations appear in certain hadith sources regarding the "chosen status" of the Arabs; the association of loving them with faith and hating them with hypocrisy; intercession specific to Arabs; the linking of Islam’s survival to that of the Arabs; and the virtues of the Arabic language. These narrations have frequently surfaced—and occasionally been exploited—in both historical contexts, such as the Umayyad-“Mawali” tensions and the “Shu'ubiyya” debates, and in contemporary discussions on racism and nationalism. In this research, the narrations in question are classified under six thematic headings; for each narration, the Arabic text and its translation are provided, its location in primary hadith sources is identified, and the authenticity assessments made by hadith scholars and researchers are included. Thus, the “takhrij” process was completed first. In the analysis phase, the narrations were evaluated regarding their content in light of the views of commentators and contemporary scholars, as well as the fundamental principles of the Qur'an and the authentic “Sunnah”. The “takhrij” process revealed that the narrations do not share the same level of authenticity; only a limited number are accepted as “sahih” (authentic), while the vast majority are classified as “da'if” (weak), “munkar” (denounced/irregular), “batil” (invalid/baseless), or “mawdu'” (fabricated). The analysis further determined that the "chosen status" depicted in these narrations refers not to racial superiority, but rather to... It has been concluded that this points to an honor stemming from the fact that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent from among the Arabs and the Qur’an was revealed in Arabic; therefore, these narrations must be interpreted in light of Islam’s concept of superiority based on “taqwa” (piety).
