Abstract (EN)

Segregation is a multifaceted social phenomenon characterized by the separation or exclusion of various groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, or other factors. Urban segregation is one of the most critical features of cities where segregation is a problem when a group of people is excluded from society and the use of services, public activities, and even job and education opportunities. Some cities are separated by socio economic differences where urban policies are a significant part of the problem of segregation. This thesis reviews the history of segregation through the ages, how it developed according to place and time, and the nature of its application in societies. This thesis provides analysis of segregation, encompassing an exploration of its theoretical underpinnings, an assessment of the impact of government policies on its prevalence, and an investigation into its social and cultural aspects in contemporary societies. This thesis reviews the formation and development of urban planning in the city of Aleppo throughout history and the implementation of plans that contradict the formations of the historic city, which led to socio-economic class divisions at the neighbourhood level. The thesis focused on assessing the socio-economic divisions in the city and its role in the civil war and the concentration of conflict areas.
