The effect of caregiver psychoeducati̇on on recovery levels of depressi̇on pati̇ents with fami̇ly burden and expressed emoti̇ons of caregivers

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of caregiver psychoeducation applied to depression patients and their caregivers receiving inpatient treatment on the depressive symptoms and recovery levels of depression patients, burden perceptions and emotional expression of caregivers. Materials and Methods: The study is a randomized controlled experimental research. The sample of the study was 'experiment' (n=46) who were followed up in the inpatient service at Adnan Menderes University Hospital Psychiatry Service with diagnoses of F32 (Depressive Disorder according to ICD 10 code) and F33 (Recurrent Depressive Disorder according to ICD 10 code) and met the inclusion criteria for the study and a control group (n=46) with a total of 92 depression patients and their caregivers.Patients and caregivers in the experimental group were given psychoeducation consisting of six sessions twice a week, one-on-one and face-to-face. An introductory information form was administered to the patients and caregivers included in the study, the Beck Depression Scale and Recovery Assessment Scale were administered to the patients, and the Emotion Expression Scale and Zarit Family Burden Scale were administered to the caregivers before the training, one month after the training, and three months later. The data of the study were analyzed withthe Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Version 25 (PASW Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) program and the experimental and control groups were compared in terms of the variables of the study. In the evaluation of data; arithmetic mean, standard deviation, median, frequency, percentage), Student's t test, Paired Samples test, Pearson Chi-square test; in normally distributed comparisons; Mann Whitney U, Wilcoxon test for non-normal distribution comparisons; As initial analyses, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to evaluate normal distribution and Analysis of Variance was used for repeated measurements. Ethics committee permission, institutional permission, scale usagepermission and participant written consent were obtained for the research. Results: In the study, it was found that there was a significant decrease in the Beck Depression Inventory Total Scores in the experimental group one month and three months after psychoeducation compared to the control group, and there was a significant increase in the Recovery Evaluation Scale Total Scores compared to the control group (p <0.05).In the study, it was found that the Emotional Expression Scale Total Scores of the caregivers in the experimental group were lower than the control group, one month after psychoeducation and three months later (p<0.05).In the study, it was determined that the Zarit Family Burden Scale Total Scores of the caregivers in the experimental group decreased compared to the control group, one month after psychoeducation and three months after the training (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results show that caregiver psychoeducation reduces depressive symptoms and increases the level of recovery in depressed patients; It has been shown that it is effective in reducing caregivers' emotional expression levels and family burden.
