Opinions of Syrian students and Turkish and social studies teachers on the values of peace and respect for differences

Values are social elements which give shapes to social behaviors and life, order, integrity to society, and when needed at right place and time, they show how people should behave while forming our World. Today it is not expected that societies in the world can live without value factors. And societies, which keep themselves away and depart from the values to which they belong, may slowly lose the steady of their bases and they may become disappeared over time. Each citizen and even foreigners in a society should know and respect values. This is necessary for the sustainability of public welfare and for the prevention of disturbance. The number of Syrian people in Turkey is increasing day by day. And searches are being carried out for the integration of school-age children into Turkish education system. In short, it is known that the way for Syrian families living in our country to adapt to our society is through education and efforts are being made in this direction. This study is important in respect to the manifestation of the fact that Syrian students and Turkish teachers can present the perspectives and approaches of values to "welfare" and "respect for diversity." This study is carried out in order that Syrian students and their Turkish teachers present the values of "welfare" and "respect for diversity." In this research, the model of case study, which is appropriate for the approaches of qualitative research, is used. In determining the study group, purposive sampling method is used. The research is conducted in the Temporary Education Center of Halil-Meziyet Bildirici Secondary School located in Tent-city Accommodation Facility in Gaziantep / Nizip in 2017-2018 academic years. Semi-structured interview technique was used in the study. The data obtained from the research were analyzed by using content analysis method. Research data were analyzed by using NVivo 12 qualitative analysis program. Looking at the Syrian students' approach to these values, it is seen that they are aware of the values, associate them with the war happening in their country and they state that these values have a very important place in their lives and want these the values to be taught not only in classes but also in their daily lives. Starting from these study, there are different suggestions. In this direction, these values had better be included in the curriculum and in classes as thematic activities as much as possible. These values can be further associated with everyday life and they can be embodied, and regarding values, students and especially teachers should be given information, conferences, seminars and symposia.
