The banal evil as a cultural practice within the context of the movie "Hoots and Flies"

In this study, the phenomenon of malignment, dominant theme in the short movie, named as "Hoots and Flies" shot within the scope of the thesis, was examined within the framework of ordinary and cultural practices. The malignment topic examined in different disciplines, was linked with God in the traditional history of thought and was viewed as the topic of theological discussions. Because this study was derived from a connection between the responsibility of human being and his/her choices with the actualized malignant actions, in the literature review section of the study the discussions around malignance regarding the ethical perspective were presented. With a deductive perspective in the literature review section, firstly malignance was discussed as an ethical category and phenomenon. In the third section of the study, the malignancy experienced within the historical and societal processes with presenting their examples. In the next chapter, the benevolence motivation under the maleficence was examined. In the chapter within that the banality of evil, which is the main topic examined in this study, the topics of malignancy that is conscious and unconscious and of accurate evaluation and ethical action were mentioned. Within the light of all this theoretical framework presented, "The White Ribbon" shot by Micheal Haneke and "The Bride" shot by Ömer Lütfi Akad movies were analyzed within the context of banality of the evil, then the short movie "Hoots and Flies" that was shot within the scope of this thesis were evaluated.
