Abstract (EN)

Biga is one of the most important towns of Çanakkale. The founding date of Biga is not known definitely. İts ancient name is known as pegai. İt is rumuored that Alexander the Great defeated Persians in this region in 334 BC. After being under control of Lysimakes, one of the commanders of Alexander's army, the town was governed by the Pergamum kings, the Romans and the Byzantines respectively. Karesioğulları Beylic took the control of this region in the early years of the 14th century but the city of Pegai could not be captured until Lala Şahin Paşa, who is a commander of Murat the First's army, conquered the city in the summer of 1364. The Biga sanjak, being a part of Cezayir-i Bahri Sefid province controlled by kaptan pasha, had its borders over today's Çanakkale and Balıkesir provinces in that period. İt became an administrative district in 1886 after that, it became a sanjak centre for a while. As it was an important sanjak centre during the ottoman period, Biga has got many ottoman style achitectural structures those are inherited from the ottoman empire. the most outstanding structures among them are wooden ceiled mosques with their plain decorations. Apart from that structures like bridges, Turkish baths, fountains, school buildings and shadirwans (water-tank fountains) are assessed within the scope of our thesis. Our thesis includes the drawings, definitions and comparison of similar structures
