Abstract (EN)
Aim: Bipolar disorder; is a chronic psychiatric disease characterized by severe functional loss, manic, depressive, mixed episodes and remission periods. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the levels of serum pannexin 1, IL-6, TNF alpha, S100B and oxidative stress parameters in patients with bipolar disorder and to evaluate the serum levels of pannexin, a candidate biomarker, in order to investigate the role of neuroinflammatory processes in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder between the ages of 18-65, who applied to Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Hospital, 46 first-degree bipolar disorder patient relatives and 50 healthy control groups were included in the study. After obtaining the consent of the patients, their sociodemographic characteristics and clinical data were recorded in the attached form. Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI), Hamilton Depression Raiting Scale (HAM D), and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) scales were administered to the patients. Serum pannexin 1, IL-6, TNF alpha, S100B levels were studied by ELISA method, and serum TAS and TOS levels were studied by colorimetric method in ADVIA 1800 device. Mann Whitney-U, Student t, Kruskal Wallis and Spearman correlation tests were used for statistical analysis and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: It was observed that the Panx1, IL-6, TNF alpha, S100B, TOS averages of the patients were higher than the control group (p<0.001). A significant relationship was found between disease duration and TNF alpha level. There was no significant correlation between CGI, YMRS, HAM-D and KIDO scales and pannexin 1 levels. The Panx1 mean (6.08±3.94) of the patients with lithium blood level in the range of 0.5-1.2 mEq/L was compared to the Panx1 mean of the patients below 0.5 mEq/L (4.34±2.83) was found to be higher than (p=0.026). Conclusion: As a result of our study, a significant increase was found in serum pannexin 1 levels of bipolar disorder cases. It was observed that there was a statistically significant difference in serum IL-6, TNF alpha, S100B, TOS levels between the groups. A statistically significant relationship was found between lithium, which is one of the important agents in the treatment of bipolar disorder, and pannexin 1. Key words: Bipolar disorder, pannexin 1, inflammation, oxidative stress, lithium
