Urban transformation of a slum area: Sample of Macun District (Ankara / Yeni̇mahalle)

Urban transformation is a planning tool that should be implemented in order to raise living standards in socio-economic, socio-cultural and physically degraded urban areas and it is a comprehensive activity that should be understood and implemented as a whole not only physically but also socially, economically, culturally and environmentally.The urban transformation activities focused on application since the 2000s in Turkey have been carried out under the urban transformation projects and these applications vary in extent.Projects focusing mainly on slum areas in large cities are criticized for the emergence of conflicts in the examples applied in these areas.The impressions that the problematic slum areas gained continuity with the implementation of the transformation project drew our attention to the issue, causing this thesis to handle "Ankara-Yenimahalle-Macun Urban Renewal (Slum Transformation) Project in Ankara-Yenimahalle-Macun Neighborhood in collaboration with TOKİ (Housing Development Administration of Turkey) and Yenimahalle Municipality for research.The aim of this study is to determine what kind of changes occurred in the demographic, social, cultural, economic and environmental respects in the district of transformation and whether the change in the physical area has the intended effect on the residents.In addition, this study targets to define the level of satisfaction of the residents in the project area; how they undergo the process, their views on the process and what is produced and consumed in the socio-cultural and socio-economic context before and after the transition from shanty houses to TOKI housing.When the data obtained within the scope of the study were analyzed, it was found that the urban transformation did not take place in all dimensions and the residents were mostly dissatisfied with the type of transformation applied.
