Evaluation of the knowledge level of students of a nursing school regarding the approach, monitoring and treatment process in neonatal jaundice

Purpose: It was conducted to evaluate the knowledge levels of nursing students regarding the approach, monitoring and treatment process in neonatal jaundice. Material and Method: The research was conducted descriptively between May-June 2023 with 222 nursing students studying at a foundation university in Istanbul and who volunteered to participate in the research. Data were obtained through a data collection form developed by the researcher based on relevant literature knowledge. The data collection form consists of two sections. The first section includes 13 questions regarding the sociodemographic characteristics of the students. The second section includes a total of 50 questions consisting of four subsections (signs and symptoms, preventive care, treatment, family education) regarding the monitoring, follow-up and management of neonatal jaundice. The data obtained in the study were analyzed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 25.0 program. Descriptive statistical methods (number, percentage, mean, standard deviation) were used while evaluating the data. The conformity of the data used to normal distribution was tested. The significance level was taken as p<0.05 Findings: It is seen that 53.2% of the participants are in the under 23 age group. It is seen that there is a statistically significant difference between the total knowledge scores of the participants according to their classes (p<0.05). It is seen that the total knowledge scores of the final year participants are higher than the second and third year participants. Conclusion: According to the findings obtained from the study, it is seen that the knowledge levels of the students about jaundice should be supported with theoretical and practical training and that there is a need to provide information in accordance with current practices.
