Populism as a political communication style: Comparative analysis of Turgut Özal's "İcraatın İçinden" (Through the Achievements) and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's "Ulusa Sesleniş" (Address to the Nation) speeches

Culture, arts, science, politics not only in Ottoman Empire but also in Turkish Republic has been highly influenced from West. Developments in Europe has brought similar advancements in Turkey. The purpose of the thesis is to reveal widespread populism through empirical methods but especially massive Right Wing or conservative parties achievements which has been on the rise since 1980s and its reflection over Turkey in order to contribute to the politic communication practices researches in Turkey.Through this aim in order to protect the objectivity the government ministers? relation with citizens has been observed. Among these relationships the one with the greatest impact on a certain period and with continuity relation and usually claimed conversation of two leaders was studied as an example event. The examples of the research are the texts of Turgut Özal?s speech of ?İcraatın İçinden? (Through the Achievements) during his presidency (1983-1989) and prime minister Tayyip Erdoğan?s ?Ulusa Sesleniş? (Address to the Nation) during 2002-2008 years.Quantitative context analysis has been applied in the research. Referring to quantitative context analysis 10 speeches with massive addressing to community has been chosen. In order to locate mutual points a framework has been done through quantitative context analysis; in order to locate similarities and differences of the populist statement styles a statement resolution has been applied. Thus in a frame of institutional and conceptional evidences have been shown with main sides.This research is very important for not only in terms of political communication but also in terms of political science in Turkey which puts forward the first scientific studies as an empirical attempt.
