Evaluation of anxiety and depression in patients applied with dyspepsia to family medicine outpatient clinic in A University Hospital

Objectives: In this study our aim is to investigate the depression, anxiety levels between functional dyspepsia and healthy controls in the patients applied to family medicine outpatient clinic. Materials and methods: The polulation of this cross-sectional study was the patients aged between 18-65 years who presented to Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Family Medicine outpatient clinic and without dyspepsia. 600 people icluding 397 women and 203 men participated in our study. In the study, the sociodemographic data form consisting of 13 questions, Beck depression scale, Beck anxiety scale and in order to measure the severity of dyspepsia SODA (Severity of Dyspepsia Assesment) scale were filled. The p values below 0,05 accepted as significant. Results: Of the 300 patients with dyspeptic complaints, 33% were male and 67% were female; the mean age was 31,4±8,82 years; 34,6% of the patients without dyspeptic complaints were male, 65,4% were female and the mean age was 30,21±9,13 years. According to our results with BAI (Beck Anxiety Inventory), anxiety score was 14,9±8,98 in the patient group and 14,0±9,29 in the control group; depression score of BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) was 11,5±7,01 in the patient group and 11,4±7,09 in the control group. In our study, there was a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of smoking and 63,1% of the patient group smoked while this rate was 36,9% in the control group. (p<0,001). In our study, when the anxiety levels of the patients and control groups were compared, a statistically significant difference was found (p = 0.008), but there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the degree of depression (p=0,918). Conclusion: Our study indicated that dyspeptic patients should have psychologic problems. Therefore patients shoud be evaluated by psychiatry as well as gastroenterology.
