Abstract (EN)
This thesis titled "From Bursa to Kosovo: Ottoman Architecture in the Period of Hüdavendigar (Murad I)" deals with the Ottoman architectural works erected between the years 1362 and 1389. Murad I succeeded to the Beylik in the aftermath of Orhan Gazi's death in 1362; and in parallel with the political and military advancements during his period, Ottoman Empire expanded to a territory of approximately 261.000 kms. It has been ascertained that 89 buildings were constructed in 31 different settlements within the area in question. Of those, 52 could not make it to the present day, 7 have been re-constructed, yet another 6 have partially reached today; 24 of them, on the other hand, still preserve the characteristics of the period to a large extent. During the reign of Murad I, three distinct social classes including members of the dynasty, Akinji-Beys, administrators and members of the ilmiye class along with ahis, sheikhs and dervishes pioneered and steered the architectural constructions. Only 3 of the constructions in the period have inscriptions with the architect's name on them. Therefore, that the name of the person who was entrusted with the construction was found on the inscription of Tuzla Hüdavendigar Mosque, and the name of the calligrapher was similarly found on the inscription of Ankara Cankiri Gate Bridge is highly important in that these are the first records kept in the history of Ottoman architecture. During the reign of Murad I, many examples of 14 different kinds of constructions such as mosques, masjids, madrasahs, schools, almshouses, zawiyahs, baths, thermal springs, tombs, bridges, public houses and palaces were erected. Of the 89 constructions, 15 are baths, 4 are inn, 2 are thermal springs, 4 are bridges, 7 are madrasahs, 2 are schools, 27 are mosques/masjids, 3 are mosques transformed from churches, 4 are palaces, 3 are tombs, 3 are grand mosques, and 8 are zawiyahs.
