Voices in verbs in terms of meaning and function in Chagatai Turkish

February 2016, 284 pages The topıc of the thesis is to show how language was used during Chagatai Turkısh Period by analyzing verbs, which take suffixes,in terms of meaning and function.In the thesis,some poetic works of Ali Şîr Nevâyî and one of Hüseyin Baykara's works, Divân, have been analyzed finding the verbs which take suffixes.In this sense,verbs have been divided into six groups in terms of structure: Transitivised voice,causative voice,passive voice, voice with no subject,reflexive voice and reciprocal voice. Each group has been evaluated under two different titles relating verbs with meaning and structure. In the ıntroduction; the Political State in the Middle Asia during sixteenth century, how Chagatai Turkish was formed, works of two distinguished figures of Classical Period of Chagatai Turkish: Ali Şîr Nevâyî and Hüseyin Baykara and the influence of Ali Şir Nevâyî an literature of the period have been explained. In the first chapter; the concept of voice and voice grouping have been dealt with. In the second chapter, voice has been analyzed in terms of meaning and structure. In the final chapter, all these voices have been illustrated with graphics and statistical data. The etymological analysis of verbs have been shown in paranthesis in the structure part of voices. The meanings of the verbs according to how they are used in the couplets and the difference in the meaning have been explained with examples from the couplets in the meaning part of voices. In this study, the metaphoric meanings of verbs have been excluded. In addition, idioms and compound verbs have also been omitted.Verbs have been ordered alphabetically. The number of the lines of the couplets and odes have been given just next to the couplets. Chagatai dictionaries have been used to give meanings to the verbs. If the verbs cannot be found in the dictionaries or if the meanings that the verbs have gained can not be associated with the meanings of the verbs in the dictionaries;then the meanings of the verbs have been given according to their context. While writing the verbs in terms of spelling, the most important source is the literary texts themselves. If the spellings of verbs vary, these changes have been tried to be shown as a whole.
