Effects of working memory capacity and cognitive load on decision making and rational-experiential information processing

In this study, the way that cognitive load effects information processing strategy and how it changes decision making is investigated. The study conducted with 92 undergraduate students, working memory capacity was measured with Operation Span Task. Rational-Experiential Inventory and decision making questions were presented under both cognitive load and no-load conditions. Results show that working memory capacity is related to rational information processing but not related to experiential processing as excepted. Differentiation of working memory cpacity between groups did not have a main effect on decision making. Cognitive load did not affect decision making and rational information processing but contrary to expectations, it had an effect on experiential information processing. Results are discussed according to the limitations of the study and suggestions for future research.
