A study on English vocabulary learning strategies of Çankiri Karatekin University students

The research with Çankırı Karatekin University students includes quantitative research methods. The study includes a survey of 623 out of 4104 students who is studying at Çankırı Karatekin University for the academic year 2022-2023. The question has been answered so that the variables of Çankırı Karatekin University first-year student's usage of English vocabulary learning strategies. The students' variables of gender, their mother's and father's levels of education, the type of the high school they are graduated and the region where the high school is were discussed. "Vocabulary Learning Strategies Usage Scale" was used to determine the vocabulary learning strategies of the students in English language learning. It shows that the sub-dimensions of "Note-Taking Strategies" and "Repetition Strategies" differ according to the gender variable. Accordingly, female participants use note-taking and repetition strategies more than male participants. It is concluded that the students whose mothers have a graduate education use metacognitive and organization strategies more. There is no statistically significant difference between the students' father's education level and the scale total levels. When the average scores of the participants were examined according to the variable of the type of school graduated, it was concluded that the students who graduated from science high school used repetition strategies more than the students who graduated from other high school types. It was concluded that the average score of the students who graduated from a high school located in the Southeastern Anatolia region was higher than the students who graduated from a high school located in other regions.
