Abstract (EN)
Street harassment remains a significant challenge in Morocco, profoundly affecting women's daily lives and psychological well-being. This study investigates the impact of street harassment in Casablanca, examining its emotional and behavioral consequences, as well as the effectiveness of existing legal and social responses. The research is grounded in feminist theory, focusing on how patriarchal social norms shape the public space and constrain women's mobility. Methodologically, the study employs a qualitative approach, using semi-structured in-depth interviews with women from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in Casablanca. This approach allows for a nuanced understanding of how women perceive and cope with harassment. The analysis follows a thematic framework, identifying patterns related to emotional distress, coping mechanisms, and interactions with legal institutions. The study also critically engages with Law 103-13, which aims to address violence against women, assessing its implementation challenges and societal reception. The findings reveal that street harassment triggers fear, anxiety, and a loss of self-worth, prompting behavioral changes such as altering routines, avoiding specific areas, and modifying clothing choices to reduce visibility. Despite the introduction of legal measures, enforcement remains weak, largely due to societal normalization of harassment, inadequate public awareness, and persistent victim-blaming attitudes. This gap between legislation and practice points to the necessity of integrating feminist perspectives into policy-making to address the root causes of gender-based violence. The study calls for comprehensive reforms, including stronger legal enforcement, gender-sensitive education, and urban planning strategies that prioritize women's safety. Additionally, cultural transformation through awareness campaigns and community engagement is essential to challenge the patriarchal norms that perpetuate harassment. Addressing this issue requires coordinated efforts across legal, educational, and infrastructural dimensions to create safer public spaces where women can move freely without fear.
