Abstract (EN)

The study was conducted as a "randomized controlled trial" designed to determine the effect of safety-equipped peripheral intravenous catheters on vascular access success (success rate at first access, number of attempts, procedure time), pain level and crying time in children aged 3-6 years in the pediatric emergency department. The sample group of the study consisted of 180 children (Safety-Equipped PIC group=90; Classic PIC group=90) between the ages of 3 and 6 years who were admitted to the pediatric emergency department of a university hospital in Istanbul between January and May 2022. "Patient Follow-up Form", "Difficult Intravenous Access (DIVA)" and "FLACC Pain Scale" were used for data collection. Descriptive characteristics of the children were similar between the groups (p>0.05). It was determined that safety-equipped PICs increased the success rate at the first access, decreased the number of PIC interventions, decreased the pain score and shortened the procedure time and crying time (p>0.001). In conclusion, the use of safety peripheral intravenous catheters was found to be effective on vascular access success.
