Relationship between blood lactate levels and mortality on patients of pediatric intensive care unit

Introduction and Aim: Many factors affecting mortality in critically ill patients are poorly understood. We aim To examine the relationships between simple admission laboratory variable blood lactate level and mortality on children admitted to intensive care.Cases and Methods: İn this study 298 cases were selected that admitted to the Pediatric İntensive Care Unit of Hospital Dicle Universty Medical School between jenuary 2007 and december 2007. Their files were scanned retrospectively. We compared both first measured blood lactate level and arithmetic mean of all measured lactate level during treatment with mortality. Datas were analysed by spss 17 programme.Findings: we found, that relationship between both first measured blood lactate level and arithmetic mean of all measured blood lactate level during treatment and mortality with independent diagnosis (p<0.001). Also we found, relationship between both first measured blood lactate level and arithmetic mean of all measured lactate level during treatment and mortality in sepsis, pneumonia, entox, burn and convulsion cases (p<0.05). we found, that relationship only between arithmetic mean of all measured lactate level during treatment and mortality in metabolic acidosis cases (p<0,05). We did not find, that relationship between both first measured blood lactate level and arithmetic mean of all measured lactate level during treatment and mortality in scorpion sting cases (p>0,05).Results: was found, that high blood lactate level on admission to intensive care unit is associated with mortality in children.Key words: Blood Lactate level, Mortality, Pediatric intensive care ünit.
