Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of urinary tract infection (UTI) on urinary calcium excretion.Total 82 children (mean age 5,42±4,02) with UTI were enrolled to the study. The control group consisted of 82 children (mean age 5,41± 4,09 years). They were selected randomly from our previous study which had performed to investigate the percentile range of urinary calcium excretion in children of our region. Urinary calcium excretion was studied in children with UTI before treatment, three days after treatment and six months after UTI when children were on remission. Urine calcium/creatinine ratio (Uca/cr) and daily calcium excretion rates were studied. Uca/cr ratios were also evaluated as percentile rates. The effects of location of the infection, age, complaints, family history of urolithiasis, type of microorganizms, radiological findings and the medications on urinary calcium excretion were also investigated. No statisticaly significant difference was found between the pretreatment (0,13±0,14) and posttreatment (0,12±0,15) and remission (0,12±0,15) Uca/cr and also daily urinary calcium excretion (pretreatment :1,69±1,02mg/kg/d, posttreatment:1,77±1,70 mg/kg/d, remission: 2,27±1,44). However, the difference in Uca/cr before treatment was higher than control group (p=0,004), the difference between the Uca/cr percentiles was not significant. No statisticaly significant relationship was found between the pretreatment Uca/cr and location of infection, family history, radiological findings and medications. There was a poor to moderate correlation between the age and pretreatment Uca/cr values (r=-0,32).In conclusion, there was not a significant relation between hypercalciuria and urinary tract infection.
