Abstract (EN)

The impact of the current pandemic situation on mental health might be related to individual differences. Therefore, the study examines to which degree the nurses are affected by an unexpected epidemic and the influence of the individual differences that might lead up to this phenomenon or have a protective effect. The study analyzes the depression, anxiety, and degrees of burnout of the nurses working in Istanbul during the pandemic and the relevancy of these symptoms with five factor personality traits. The sample group of the research consists of 161 nurses in Istanbul province. To determine the socio-demographic traits of the participants, Socio-Demographic Information Questionnaire, to determine the levels of depression, Beck Depression Inventory, to determine the levels of anxiety, Beck Anxiety Scale, to determine the levels of burnout, Maslach Burnout Scale, and to determine the personality traits, Five Factor Personality Trait is used. Statistics Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 21.0 is used for testing the research hypothesis. The study employs parametric test techniques due to the normal distribution of the scores. T test and ANOVA test is used in order to analyze the differentiation of scale score according to demographic traits. Pearson correlation test is used to determine the correlation among the variables and to reveal the effect among the variables, a regression test. As a result, a correlation is observed between individual traits and the scores of depression, anxiety, and burnout symptom. Besides, it has been found that neuroticism, one of the personality traits, has a positive impact on depersonalisation, whereas the responsibility sub-dimension does not affect depersonalisation. The 8% of the change in depersonalisation explanied with neuroticism. Again, neuroticism clarifies the %2 of the change in anxiety scale and %4 of the change in depression scale. It can be stated that the personality traits of nurses during the COVID-19 period are significant in understanding the relationship between depression, anxiety, and burnout.
