Abstract (EN)

Objective: This study was carried out to determine the possible protective and therapeutic effects of hesperidin in rats with acetic acid-induced colitis. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out using 28 female Wistar Albino female rats weighing between 250-350 g. Rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups. 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose was applied to the control group by gavage in equal volumes with the other groups. In the colitis group, colitis was formed with acetic acid and 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose was applied in equal volume with the other groups by gavage. Before colitis was induced with acetic acid to the preventive treatment/pretreatment group, 150 mg/kg/day hesperidin by gavage and 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose by gavage was applied in equal volume with the other groups, and at the end of 7 days colitis was formed with acetic acid. After colitis was induced with acetic acid, 150 mg/kg hesperidin was administered to the Treatment/Posttreatment group for 7 days. Biochemical analyzes were made with appropriate samples from blood samples and histopathological evaluations were made on colon tissues. "One-way analysis of variance" (one-way ANOVA) method was used in data analysis. Cases with p<0.05 were considered statistically significant in the evaluations, and post-hoc test (Tukey) was used for significant data. Results: Comparision of the preventive treatment and the treatment groups in our study show that statistically significant results were found in Total Oksidant status (TOS), Oxidative Stress, Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), Interleukin-6 (IL-6) values (p<0.05). Hesperedin provided histopathological improvement but did not significantly reduce tissue damage induced by acetic acid. Conclusion: In this study, it was concluded that hesperedin can improve the oxidative damage and tissue damage caused by colitis by exhibiting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Keywords: Hesperidin, Interferon-gamma, Interleukin-6, Rat, Ulcerative Colitis.
