Abstract (EN)
In the last century, the increasing number and intensity of disasters have led to more damage to communities worldwide, increasing the need for post-disaster shelter solutions. Natural disasters such as earthquakes have left millions of people homeless, affecting not only the need for safe shelter but also access to health, education, and economic opportunities. Temporary shelter structures play a vital role in improving the quality of life for earthquake victims and keeping them safe. However, when evaluated from the perspective of sustainability, approaches that minimize both environmental and social impacts of temporary shelter solutions are of great importance. This study examines the sustainable design of temporary shelter structures used for displaced individuals until they transition to permanent housing after an earthquake. The study analyzes selected examples from major disasters in both the world and Turkey according to sustainability principles. The research investigates how temporary shelter structures can be planned and designed in compliance with the economic, environmental, and social sustainability principles. As a result of this study, temporary shelter solutions that will meet the social needs of displaced individuals, minimize environmental impacts, and be economically efficient have been proposed. Furthermore, sustainable shelter solutions such as Tiny Houses have also been examined and presented as an effective alternative for temporary shelter after disasters. These suggestions aim to contribute to the design of more effective and sustainable temporary shelters in future disasters.
