Determination by survey of preferred materials, methods and application types in root canal treatment by general dentists

ABSTRACT Determination by Survey of Preferred Materials, Methods and Application Types in Root Canal Treatment by General Dentists Aim: The aim of our study was to determine the materials, methods and application types used by general dentists in root canal treatment through a survey and to compare the data with previous studies from Turkey and the World. Material and methods: To obtain data, the survey includes 21 questions was designed and applied between March-October 2017 to totally 691 general dentists, 393 of them were attended 24. International Scientific Congress and Exhibition of İzmir Dental Chamber. The purpose of the study was told to the dentist and those who want to complete the survey were included into the study. The data were analysed with Chi-Square test by IBM SPSS Statistics 23 software. Results: It was found that %22.7 of dentists was not performing root canal treatment. The electric pulp test was the most preferred vitality tests by %47 of general dentists and the most preferred material to determine the working length was electronic apex locators. Moreover, the most used irrigation solution amongst dentists who perform root canal treatment was NaOCl by %91.6 and the favourite choice of intracanal medication material was Ca(OH)2 by %91.4. Ni-Ti rotary files during root canal shaping were preferred by %85.6 of the participants and %72.1 of them chose single cone technique for root canal filling. Also it was found that only %1.5 of the dentists used rubber-dam during root canal treatment. Conclusion: : When the results of the survey are considered it was found that older dentists chose to use convantional methods more than younger dentists. There was no standardization in the choice of materials and methods irrespective of dentist's age, gender or institution they work for. Rubber-dam usage during root canal treatment was less than the rest of the World. Key words: Survey, Endodontic treatment, Root canal treatment.
