Abstract (EN)
This study aims to compile, evaluate, and culturally interpret customs, practices, and beliefs related to transitional periods such as birth, circumcision, marriage, and death, observed among the people of the Çermik, Çüngüş, and Ergani regions of Diyarbakır province. The study was conducted based on field research, and traditional practices were recorded through interviews. The research determined that the transitional period practices in the region bear a significant resemblance to the ancient Turkish belief system and cultural structure, and that they have also been shaped within Anatolian folk culture and have survived to the present day. The interaction between Turks and different cultures throughout history has created cultural richness and diversity in this region. While the study is based on the transitional period classifications used in previous folklore studies, additional headings have been created based on new findings. In this respect, the study both supports the existing literature and offers original contributions. Sections of the Study: The introduction provides information about the historical and geographical structure of the Çermik, Çüngüş, and Ergani regions. The purpose, scope, method, and significance of the study are also explained. The first section examines customs, practices, and beliefs related to the birth process in the region, and evaluates traditional methods applied from pre-pregnancy to postpartum. The second section examines beliefs, rituals, and ceremonial forms related to circumcision. It reveals how circumcision is perceived as both a religious and social transition. The third section provides a detailed analysis of marriage traditions, engagement ceremonies, wedding preparations, henna nights, and post-wedding practices practiced in the region. The fourth section identifies beliefs and practices related to death and the afterlife, burial rituals, the mourning process, and the mevlid ceremony later in life. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the customs and beliefs of the transition period in the Çermik, Çüngüş, and Ergani regions are an important part of both local identity and Turkish cultural heritage, demonstrating that these practices, which bridge the gap between the past and the present, are still maintained.
