The effect of postpartum discharge training on the readiness of the mothers to the discharge

The purpose of the research is to examine the effect of postpartum discharge training on the readiness of the mothers to the discharge. The research was carried out as semi-experimentally with a control group at the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Denizli State Hospital between January-October 2016. The research covers a total of 224 mothers who gave birth with caesarean consisting of 110 mothers in the training group and 114 mothers in the control group. Discharge training was given to the mothers of the training group on the first day after the birth and the booklets which were prepared after the training were delivered to them. The data were gathered with "Personal Information Form", "Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale-New Mother Form" (RHD-NMF). In the analysis of data, the descriptive statistics and chi square, Student t, Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher's Exact test were used. According to the total scale score of RHD-NMF; it was identified that the mothers in the training group (176.61±22.423) took higher score than the average values of the mothers in the control group (169.94±26.093) and the difference between them are statistically significant (t=2,049 p=0,042). It was found that information and skill sub-dimension scores from the scale sub-dimension scores of RHD-NMF are higher for the mothers in the training group compared to the mothers in the control group (respectively U=4237,000 p=0,000, t=2,010 p=0,046) and no difference was found between the sub-dimension scores of the personal situation and the expected support (respectively t=0,485 p=0,628 U=5785,500 p=0,312). According to the results of our work, it was determined that the discharge training during the postpartum period affected positively the readiness of mothers to the discharge.
