Abstract (EN)

Childbirth preparation trainings can reduce the fear of birth which is common in primiparous women and may have positive effects on maternal and newborn birth outcomes. 'The aim of this study was to determine the effect of birth' fear and type of birth preferences of pregnant women attending childbirth preparation trainings. The population of the study consisted of 220 primiparous pregnant women who had applied to Obstetrics Clinic at ''SBU Istanbul Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospita''l between January 01, 2019 and July 31, 2019,110 pregnant women who had at least one Prep Birth Training at least once, and 110 of those haven't received birth training at all. The research is semi-experimental and prospective. The training group participated in childbirth preparatory training at least once, and no intervention was made to the non-training group. The data of the study was collected by face to face interviews with pregnant women. ''Personal Information Form, Wijma Birth Expectation / Experience Scale Version A, Self-Efficacy Scale'' were used for data collection. Percentage, Anova, Mann-Whitney U, Chi-Square, T-test, Kruskal Wallis, and Pearson correlation analysis tests were used for numerical continuous variable analysis and the difference between the groups was evaluated using Scheffe test. All women in the education and non-education groups were married, older than 18 years of age and consisted of primiparous pregnant women. The majority of the women in the education group were university graduates, with an average age of 28.91 years and 24.25 for the non-education group. While the group receiving training had moderate birth fear (W-DEQ score 52.61), this score increased to 57.04 in the non-training group, and the birth fear (W-DEQ score between 38-65) was moderate in both groups. The birth preference of primiparous pregnant women who were educated and not educated was similar and 95.9% of the group receiving education and 87.3% of the group receiving no education planned normal vaginal delivery. At the end of the delivery, the primiparous pregnant women who were educated 49.4% had cesarean section and 50.7% had normal vaginal delivery. It was determined that the rate of the indications for cesarean section was higher than planned as 95.5 % and the most common reasons were medical indications. As a result of our study, it was found that getting education for birth, increased the preference of normal vaginal birth as a method of delivery (p <0.05), but cesarean rates'were found to be high. It is recommended that' pre-natal care and delivery preparation trainings should be expanded.
