Abstract (EN)

In this study, the aim was to investigate the self-esteem and depression levels of adolescents based on their parents' alcohol dependence. A total of 90 adolescents, including 56 females and 34 males, who were receiving education in Istanbul, participated in the research. Personal information forms were used to determine the demographic characteristics of the adolescents. "Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale" was employed to assess self-esteem, and "Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale" was used to determine depression levels in adolescents. The Parent Alcohol Scale was applied to the parents with whom the adolescents had been living together for at least one year. In the data analysis process, SPSS 25.0 software was utilized for Independent Samples T-test and MANOVA analysis. At the end of the study, it was found that adolescents' self-esteem and depression levels varied significantly according to their parents' alcohol dependence levels. According to the results, as parents' alcohol dependence levels increased, adolescents' self-esteem decreased (p<0.05). Additionally, it was observed that the level of depression was higher in favor of adolescents whose parents were alcohol-dependent (p<0.05). In conclusion, it can be stated that parental alcohol dependence is a factor that decreases self-esteem and increases the risk of depression in adolescents.
