Commentary Eisagoge and Categorias of Abû al-Faraj 'Abd Allâh Ibn Al-Tayyib

Our thesis is the analysis of Abû al-Faraj's commentaries called Tafsiru Kitābi Isāghūjī li Furfūryūs and Sharh al-Kabīr li Maqūlāt Aristûtâlîs that have survived to the present day. Abû al-Faraj's two commentaries mentioned here dense, we tried to present all of them in a comparative way by identifying the sources that that fed these two commentaries and were fed by them in the period in which he lived and the period before him. In this way, we tried to determine his value in the history of logic by determining his views of Abû al-Faraj on logic based on his two commentaries. Therefore, we tried to present our thesis in a way that that encompasses these two commentaries and the other commentaries written in this field in general terms. In addition, we have determined in our study what kind of changes and transformations occurred in the two commentaries on these two books mentioned in the process from the Antiquity to the Islamic world and how the issues discussed in this field could be resolved. Our thesis consists of three chapters and a conclusion, excluding the introduction. In the introduction, we examined the subject, purpose, importance, method and sources of the research. In particular, we tried to introduce the lives and works of the Hellenistic commentators, which we frequently mentioned in our thesis, in the sources of the research briefly. In the first chapter, we tried to identify Abû al-Faraj's life, teachers, students and all of his works, which he wrote on philosophy, logic, medicine and Christian teaching, at the level of commentary and compilation form, since he is little known in our country. In the second chapter, we examined Abû al-Faraj's commentary on Porphyrios's work named Eisagoge (Isāghūjī). While Porphyrius's book only deals with five universals, Abû al-Faraj's commentary and other commentaries begin with an introduction to philosophy. We also examined all the subjects of the commentary in question, including the introduction, and tried to reveal the differences and similarities between them and the other commentaries. In the third chapter, we investigate the commentary written by Abû al-Faraj on Aristotle's work called Categories. The commentary is a voluminous work written to cover the topics of all categories. We have completed our study by examining the issues discussed in the commentary in detail. Finally, we have mentioned our findings in the conclusion.
