Abstract (EN)
This `?information and applications on the personal hygiene of the mentally disabled people at the training and applications schools and rehabilitation centres that can be educated and trained?? called search was prepared to identify the personal applications of the mentally disabled people from different ages who also have physical disabilities, whether these applications are enough for them or not, whether they get help on personal hygiene or not. After discussing together with training and application schools and work centres in Afyonkarahisar, Ankara and İstanbul a survey was applied on totally 225 parents. After associating the hygiene applications of the mentally disabled people and the knowledge of the parents on personal hygiene to the parents? educational background the search was resulted by applying chi-square analysis. Mothers form the vast majority part of the parents who apply the search. Also, it was identified that it is the mothers who help the disabled people mostly. It was identified that 157 of the parents are illeterate, literate or graduated from primary schools and 68 of them graduated from secondary schools, high schools and universities. It was confirmed that 70 of the mentally disabled people also have different physical disabilities and most of them are boys at the ages of 13-18. It was also confirmed that the parents? personal hygiene knowledge diffirentiate according to their own educational background, that most of the questions were answered incorrectly by the parents who have low educational background; beside this, the parents who have high educational background do not have enough knowledge about bathing, cleaning oneself at the lavatory, eye cleaning and the frequency of the toothbrush using. The disabled people whose parents are illeterate, literate or graduated primary schools can do self-cleaning; bathing, combing hair, cutting nails, washing feet, cleaning ears, self-cleaning at the lavatory, putting of the underwear or casual clothes: whereas, the other disabled people whose parents graduated from secondary schools, high schools or universities need help just while cleaning ears, cutting nails and bathing. Disabled people wash their face when they get up; wash hands after lavatory, before and after meals; do not prefer using towels when they wash hands, wash feet when they feel dirty; wash their hair by shampoo and have bath once or twice a week. It was determined that they do not pay attention yo cleaning their ears; that the ones who clean their ears use cotton buds; that they brush their teeth twice a day; that they do not floss; that they cut their nails once a week or when they lengthen; that they overuse the water and toilet paper. Nearly all the mentally disabled people change their flannels, pants, socks or clothesevery da yor in two days. And the rate of the ones who share loofahs and towels with their family mambers are higher than the ones who do not share. All these findings show that the parents who have disabled children need to be trained on personal hygiene and assimilate the importance of the personal hygiene and then transfer it to their everyday lives. By the help of the trainig which will be taken fort he sake of improving the attitude and behaviour, the disabled people will improve themselves and it will bw possible to make people approve them more easily.
