Sedimentology and coal potential of between Elbistan-Akören-Söğütlü (Kahramanmaraş) area

The aim of this study is to investigate sedimentology, charecteristics and distrubition of lignite occurrences in Ahmetcik formation, area between Akören and Söğütlü, located northwest of Elbistan (Kahramanmaraş). To reach this aim; The geological units at selected boreholes are correlated, contour diagrams, maceral analysis, huminite reflections, XRD analysis of base clays are and three dimensional model created for the study area. The results from coal analysis; shown that these coals are in huminite group, have low calorie, high sulphur, high moisture content and can be useful to use for thermoelectric plants. Total thickness of the coal zone is thinning from west-northwest to east-southeast and finally pinches out in the study area. As a result of all data show that coal occurrences in the area have been deposited in intra-mountain lake with limnic character.
