The impact of e-commerce on the Turkish economy

This research aims to examine the economic impact of Turkey's rapidly growing ecommerce sector. The study aims to assess the impact of the digitalization process on macroeconomic indicators of the Turkish economy, particularly economic growth, employment, foreign trade balance, public revenues, and sectoral transformations. While analyzing the economic contributions of e-commerce growth, the structural challenges faced in the sector and the potential impacts of digital commerce on tax revenues are also addressed. The research emphasizes the integration of digital commerce into tax systems and the need to update sectoral regulations. In this context, it aims to provide guidance for policymakers and entrepreneurs by offering some recommendations for Turkey's digital transformation strategies. The data used in the study were obtained from reports published by TurkStat, the Ministry of Trade, TÜSİAD, and international organizations. This research aims to descriptively examine the impact of Turkey's rapidly growing electronic commerce (e-commerce) sector on macroeconomic indicators. The study presents descriptive statistics on the development trends observed in areas such as economic growth, employment, foreign trade balance, public revenues, and sectoral transformation, along with the digitalization process of e-commerce. The research also includes a modeling proposal based on a longitudinal dataset generated from 2010 to 2025. This model targets projections of Turkey's e-commerce ecosystem extending to 2030. The model is supported by synthetic interpolations based on digital adoption trends and reinforced with empirical observations from reputable sources such as Mordor Intelligence, ECDB, and IMARC.
