The relationship of cyber bullying, cyber victimization, depression, and cope with in adolescents

Objective:This study was conducted as a cross-sectional study to determine the relationship between cyber bullying, cyber victimization, depression and coping in high school students in Denizli Merkezefendi district. Materials and Methods: The population of the research consisted of 5686 students in secondary education institutions in Merkezefendi district of Denizli province, and the sample consisted of 466 students. The sample consisted of 466 students. Due to the losses, the study was carried out with 445 students. Sociodemographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Cyber Bullying Scale, Cyber Victimization Scale, Beck Depression Scale and Coping Attitudes Assessment Scale were used to collect data in the study. Descriptive statistics; numbers and percentages for categorical variables, mean±standard, minimum, maximum and range for quantitative variables. The conformity of the data to the normal distribution was checked with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskall-Wallis H test and One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to compare the scale total scores between independent groups. Relationships between scale total scores were examined by Spearman Correlation Analysis. The p˂0.05 value was considered statistically significant. Results: When the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants were examined, it was determined that 58.4% (n=260) were female, 41.6% (n=185) were male, and the mean age was 15.99±1.13. A statistically significant difference was found between the total scores of the Cyberbullying Scale according to the gender, school type and income level of the participants (p=0.003; p<0.001; p=0.049). A statistically significant difference was found between the total scores of the participants on the Cyber Victimization Scale according to the school type (p<0.001). A statistically significant difference was found between the total scores of the Beck Depression Scale according to the gender of the participants (p<0.001). In the correlation analysis, between the Coping Attitudes Evaluation Scale total score and the Cyber Victimization Scale total score, there was a weak negative level (r= -0.103; p=0.031), the negative moderate level between the Cyber Bullying Scale total score and the Cyber Victimization Scale total score (r = -0.562; p<0.001),between Cyber Bullying Scale total score and Beck Depression Inventory total score positively weak (r= 0.209; p<0.001) and negative weak level between Cyber Victimization Scale total score and Beck Depression Scale total score a significant relationship was found (r= -0.374; p<0.001). Conclusion: It was found that male students participating in the study showed more cyberbullying behavior than female students, the cyberbullying behavior increased as the age of the students increased, the female students exposed to cyberbullying experienced more depression, the female students were more able to cope, and the higher the age, the higher the level of coping. . It has been found that those whose mother's education level and father's education level are primary school or below are less cyberbullying, they experience more cyber victimization, and those who use a computer for 5 hours or more are more likely to show cyberbullying behavior. It was found that the majority of the adolescents participating in the study felt depressed and unhappy. It was determined that the coping skills of the adolescents decreased as their cyber victimization increased, and it was found that those who were exposed to cyber victimization mostly used religious coping methods. In addition, it was determined that the participants who engaged in cyberbullying experienced less cyber victimization.
