Investigation of academic procrastination and self-esteem of adolescents

Abstract (EN)

In this research, the relationship between academic procrastination and self-esteem of adolescents and whether these two variables differentiated from each other according to some sociodemografic characteristics were investigated. The universe is consisted of all 10th and 11th grade students attending Anatolian high schools in Konak, Izmir during 2012?2013 academic year. The sample is consisted of 236 girls and 184 boys, totally 420 students. Data was collected by Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, Academic Procrastination Scale and a questionnaire which was developed by the researcher. Data was analyzed by using SPSS 17 programme. When the normal theory assumptions can be provided, the data analyzed by Independent Sample t Test and One ?Way ANOVA; when the normal theory assumptions cannot be provided the data analyzed by Mann Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H. For correlation analysis, Spearman Brown analysis was used. According to results, it was found that there is a statistically significant negative relationship between academic procrastination and self-esteem of adolescents. The results show that academic procrastination of adolescents change according to gender, mother?s education status, the courses that they think they?re good at, allowance level, time for studying a day, preferred time for studying, period for starting to study for exams, time using (routines) out of school. However, it?s found that academic procrastination doesn?t change according to number of sibling, birth order in situation of parents? living together, father education status, the situation about going to an extra training center or not. Self esteem of adolescents change according to period for starting to study for exams, allowance level, perception about economic status of family, and mother?s education status. However self esteem of adolescents doesn?t change according to gender the lessons that they think they?re good at, period for studying a day, time using routines out of school, number of sibling, birth order in the family, situation of parents, living together, father education status, the situation about going to an extra training center.
