The role of irrational beliefs and problem-solving skills in adolescents' internet addiction

The aim of this research is to examine the role of irrational beliefs and problem-solving skills in the internet addiction of adolescents who continue their education in high school. The data of the study was obtained from 584 high school students studying in Erzin district of Hatay province in the second semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. "Personal Information Form", "Young Internet Addiction Scale-Short Form", "Irrational Beliefs Scale-Adolescent Form" and "Problem Solving Inventory" were used to obtain the data. While analyzing the data, T test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), tukey test and Kruskal Wallis test were used, and the relationships between the variables were examined with the Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient. The study found a positive correlation between internet addiction score and total problem-solving skill score. However, irrational beliefs did not show a significant relationship with either internet addiction or problem-solving skills. Accordingly, as the problem-solving skills of the participating adolescents decrease, their level of internet addiction increases. In addition, according to school type, the highest score average in internet addiction belongs to vocational and technical anatolian high school, the lowest score average belongs to anatolian imam hatip high school, and the internet addiction level of female students is lower than male students.
