Variables determining winning and losing a set in men's volleyball

The aim of this study is to analyze the performance of the 2022-2023 Turkish Volleyball Federation Efeler League volleyball teams on a set-by-set basis and to determine the main variables affecting set winning. In the study, 169 competitions of 14 teams competing in the Turkish Men's Volleyball Efeler League in the 2022-2023 season were analyzed. Only the competitions played during the regular season were included in the study, while play-off competitions were excluded. The data of all sets in the competitions were collected and only the fifth sets were excluded from the study due to the fact that the set ending number was different from the other sets. The data of the competitions were collected during the competitions using Data Volley Professional 4.0 statistical software. These data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 21.0 package program. Since the dependent variable "set result (winning/losing)" is categorical and has more than two categories, discriminant (function) analysis was used to determine the set result. When the results of the study are evaluated in general, it is found that the most important determinants of set winning are BLOCKEDSo, WPOINTSBp, ERRORSo, WPOINTServe, LPOINTSReception, WPOINTSBlock variables. As a result of the study, the difference between the teams that won and lost the set was also examined for the variables were not used in the discriminant analysis. The WPOINTS, TOTALServe, WPOINTSAttack, TOTALBlock scores of the team that wins the set are significantly higher than the scores of the team that loses the set. The LPOINTS, TOTALReception, TOTALAttack, ERRORAttack, BLOCKEDAttack, TOTALSo scores of the team that loses a set are significantly higher than the scores of the team that wins the set.
