The evaluation of the effect of body mass index on dental development level determined by demirjian age estimation method in children in different dentition method

The development of teeth is a process that starts from the 6th week of intraurterin life in humans. This tooth development is examined both primary dentition and permanent dentition periods. In particular, the correct determination of biological age in the legal systems of many countries has an important place in determining the level of punishment for children who commit crimes. Therefore, as in other methods, acuurate age determination from the development levels of the teeth is necessary in terms of forensic sciences. Although scales based on different tooth develompment measurements are frequently used in the field of forensic sciences, studies based on the relationship of parameters that can affect these scales are extremely limited. The aim of the study is to determine the relationship between body mass index(BMI) and tooth development in children in early and late mixed dentition and to evaluate the effect of changes BMI on the determination of age estimation. The relationship between BMI and tooth development of pediatric patients who applied to Ankara University Faculty of Dentistry, Departmen of Pedodontics have been examined. After determining BMI of 281 children aged 6 to 12 years, dental age has been determining using the Demirjian method on panoramic radiographic images. Afterwards, the obtained data has been subjected to statictical analysis. In a general summary, age calculated according to Demirjian gives better estimation results for underweight children aged 6-9 years compared to children aged 9-12, whereas normal, overweight and obese children aged 9-12 are children aged 6-9 gives better predictive results than.
