The effect of different audio distraction methots on children's postoperative pain and anxiety

The study was conducted experimentally for the purpose of determining the effect of different audio distraction methots on postoperative pain and anxiety in children. Target population of the study consisted of children in the age group of 7-14 who had undergone a surgery in pediatric surgery clinics of Bursa Dörtçelik Children's Diseases Hospital between January-October 2017. The study sample, on the other hand, consisted of a total of 90 children (Classical music=30, Turkish music=30, Story listening=30) who met the inclusion criteria. The study data were collected using Socio-Demographic Data Collection Form for Children and Parents, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale (WBFPS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (SCAIC). Children in groups were made the postoperative period first grup listened to classical music; second group Turkish music and third group aoudiobook. For the statistical analysis of the study, Shapiro Wilk, Pearson's Chi-square, Fisher-Freeman-Halton, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U, Bonferroni and Wilcoxon were used. The study groups were similar in terms of variables like gender, age and procedure of surgery that might affect pain and anxiety level (p>0,05). In the study, it was determined that the methods of listening to classical music, Turkish music and stories that were applied to children in three groups were effective on decreasing postoperative pain and anxiety state levels (p<0,05). As a consequence, it was determined that different audio distraction had a decreasing effect on postoperative pain and anxiety in children.
