Comparison of the performances of successful teams in different leagues

In this study, the technical performance variables related to offensive and defensive actions of the teams that qualified for European competitions in the 2023–2024 season from the Turkish Süper Lig and the five major European football leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1) were analyzed. These variables were compared across leagues as well as through home vs. away performance and intra-league analysis. The sample of the study consisted of 40 teams that qualified for European competitions and a total of 1,455 match data points. The data were obtained from the OPTA analysis system, which is scientifically validated and widely used in performance research. A total of 26 technical performance variables (e.g., goals scored, number of passes, xG, successful interventions) were evaluated. The raw data were filtered in Microsoft Excel and analyzed using statistical methods such as ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis H tests via SPSS 22.0 software. The findings revealed that Premier League teams outperformed other leagues in many offensive parameters such as goals scored, successful passes, shots on target, and expected goals (xG). On the other hand, Süper Lig teams showed lower performance particularly in passing efficiency and attacking organization. In terms of defensive metrics, Bundesliga teams stood out in physically demanding variables such as aerial duels and ball recoveries. Ligue 1 teams demonstrated strong performance in defensive efficiency and success in duels. The study shows that each league has distinct playing characteristics, and these differences are directly reflected in technical performance indicators. The results emphasize the importance for coaching staff to consider league-specific structures when planning training sessions and match strategies. This research aims to contribute to football clubs' strategic planning based on technical performance data and to provide a foundation for further scientific studies based on football analysis.
