Abstract (EN)
This study was carried out on one hundred patients with proximal femur fracture, treated at The Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul Bilim University between January 2002 and February 2007. One patient developed fracture of both hips at diffent incidents, and therefore 100 fractures were evaluated in 99 patients.Sixtyeight patients were female and thirty two were male. The mean age was 77.66 years (range, 37- 98 years). The right hip was involved in 57 patients, the left hip was involved in 43 patients. The mechanism of injury were pseudoarthrosis in one patient, gunshot injury in one, traffic accident in one, sports injury in three, road traffic accident in three, falling outside home.in four cases, falling at home in eightyseven. All operative procedures were performed within average 1.83 days after presentation to our hospital (range, 0-17 days). Average length of hospital stay was 13.34 days (range, 4-62 days). All patients were assessed by determining the American Society of Anesthesiologists status of physical health. During the early postoperative period, the patients were allowed to sit and partial weight bearing with double crutch or full weight bearing was allowed depending on the postoperative stability. The average follow-up was 31.3 months (range, 12 -75 months ). The patients were evaluated clinically and radiographically. Functional assessment was done using the modified Harris hip score and the mean modified Harris hip score was found to be 80.92 % . satisfactory results were achieved in 78.88% of the cases who underwent surgical treatment of intertrochanteric fractures of the femur with PFNAlthough the proximal femoral nail (PFN) is not the only alternative in treatment of unstable trochanteric fractures of the hip, when the patient?s age, medical condition, functional status, and osteoporosis are considered the PFN, which is the most biomechanical and anatomical nail, is the ideal implant for the treatment of these fractures
