The effect of education given to mothers with children with phenilketonuria on care load and anxiety levels of mothers

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive metabolic disease caused by phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency. The fact that children with phenylketonuria need care, special nutrition, follow-up and treatment negatively affect their social relations and increase the burden of care and anxiety levels of families. This study was carried out to determine the effect of education given to mothers of children with phenylketonuria on their care burden and anxiety levels. The research was planned as quasi-experimental. The sample of the study consists of 38 mothers who have children between the ages of 0-18 diagnosed with PKU. Data; The Personal Information Form was collected with the Caregiver Burden Scale (CBS) and Anxiety and Anxiety Scale (EAS). Three-session training, consisting of PKU disease, diet/nutrition therapy, and social/personal support, was applied face-to-face and individually to the mothers included in the study. In the evaluation of the data; Shapiro Wilk, t test, analysis of variance, Tukey test and Pearson correlation analysis were used. The analyzes were performed with the help of SPSS 22.0 program, and the significance level of p<0.05 was chosen. It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the scores of the caregiver burden scale and the anxiety and anxiety scale applied before and after the education (p<0.05). Accordingly, after the training, a decrease was observed in the Care Burden Scale and the Anxiety and Anxiety Scale scores. As a result of the research; It has been determined that the education given to mothers with children with phenylketonuria reduces the burden of care and anxiety levels of mothers.
