Abstract (EN)

Streptococcusagalactiae (Group B streptococcus-GBS)is a normal anorectal flora. Its presence as vaginal colonization especially in pregnant women could be a factor that cause neonatal sepsis and meningitis. Its clinical importance is essentially visible in new-born. The study of colonization rate and susceptibility testing is important in directing empirical therapy protocols. CDC recommend that the chemophrophylaxis should be put in practice in case of executing and determining of colonization during pregnancy. In this study S. agalactiae colonization rate and determination of antibiotic susceptibility rates is done on pregnant women who had admitted to our hospital. Concurrently, It is aimed to specify which serotypes are seen for the first time in our hospital. Vaginal and rectal culture samples are taken from 365 pregnant women and 100 non-pregnant women as control group within the similar ages. Totally, 465 women who had applied for checking to Obstetrics and Gynecology Polyclinic of Gaziantep University Şahinbey Araştırma ve Uygulama Hospital formed the sample of this study. The characterization of bacteria was done by using convencional and serological defining techniques. The serogroups of bacteria are specified with serological methods. Bacteria are identified on the basis of the recommendations of the CLSI antimicrobial susceptibility testing by disk diffusion method. GBS had been isolated in 28 pregnant women (7.7 %) from the pregnant women included in the study, and in 12 women from control group (12 %), with total of 40 women (8.6 %).There were no difference on the proportions between two groups. Gestational age of the pregnant women included in this study, age, number of pregnancies and modes of previous birth show no significant differences in the frequency of GBS colonization. However, 33 of the isolates (82.5%)from women over the age of 25 were found to be GBS isolated. Serotypes of all isolates were 13 isolates (32.5 %) III serotype, 8 isolates (20 %) Ib, 4 isolates (10 %) Ia ve V , 3 isolates (7.5 %) II ve IV and 5 isolates (12.5 %) were found to be unidentified. The isolated GBS were sensitive to peniciliin, vankomycin, and ofloxacin and resistance was found in 12.5% of the isolates to clindamycin and 15% to erythromycin. Keywords: Antibiotic susceptibility S. agalactiae, serotype
