Reflection of Anderson art criticism method on students' critical skills in aining visual literacy skills

With art, the individual's talent and creativity skills are developed by analyzing artistic forms. An individual's ability to make personal comments and judgments about a work of art through art criticism contributes to original thinking and visual literacy skills. In our age, the intense use of images and visuals in our physical environment as a means of communication necessitates the necessity of visual literacy skills. Visual literacy, defined as the ability to understand, interpret and express visual elements, is gained through art criticism practices. Case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. In the context of a case study or case study design, the reflections of the Anderson art criticism method, which was developed more comprehensively with analytical and synthetic interpretations by including personal reactions and intuitions in the criticism process in the field of pedagogical criticism, on students' critical abilities were examined in teaching the visual literacy skill aimed to be acquired by the individual through art criticism. . Anderson method of art criticism; It is a five-step criticism method that includes reaction, perceptual analysis, personal interpretation, contextual analysis and synthesis steps. The change and development of the students' first intuitive reactions to the work during the criticism process were examined. Based on his critical intuitions, he revealed and developed his visual literacy skills by expressing the concrete forms in the work of art with their equivalents in his own visual culture accumulation. In this research, the reflections of the Anderson art criticism method on the students' critical skills in the field of art criticism practices conducted with students studying at the 9th grade of the Science High School affiliated with the Hakkari Directorate of National Education were examined. The research was conducted with a group of 20 students. In practice, Jan van Eyck's painting The Marriage of Arnolfini was examined. As this painting was examined with the Anderson art criticism method, the participants' visual cultural achievements were revealed during the criticism process.
