The effect of stabilization of the membran with inserting dental implants and suturing on intra-sinus ossification in sinus membran elevation performed without graft material

In this study, 60 lateral window techniques were used in 30 New Zealand male rabbits. Sinus lift surgery was performed bilaterally in the rabbit sinuses and the sinuses were divided into control and experimental groups. In the control side, titanium screws were placed after the sinus membran elevation. In the experimental side, in addition to the control side, the sinus membran was sutured to the lateral bone wall with polyglactin sutures, and the animals were sacrificed at 4 and 8 weeks. In the micro-CT examinations, the percentage of osseointegration, new bone formation, sinus volume, intrasinus protrusion length of the implant and residual bone height were compared according to the treatment method (control, experiment) and time periods (4th and 8th weeks). According to the results obtained, the values of the experimental group in osseointegration were higher than the control group and the values of the 4th week were statistically significantly higher than the 8th week. While the experimental group showed higher values in the sinus volume and new bone formation around the implant than the control group at the 4th week, no significant change was observed at the 8th week. While the experimental group showed higher values in the height of residual bone than the control group, there was no significant difference in the amount of intrasinus protrusion of the implant based on groups or weeks. On the other hand, a statistically significant decrease was observed in new bone formation as the protrusion length increased in the total sample. According to the study data, it is thought that in addition to the tenting effect of the implants, the suturing of the sinus membran to the lateral bone wall with a late resorbing suture may contribute more to the intra-sinus ossification in the long term.
