The effect of informative video viewing for children in day surgery considering preoperative anxiety and behavioral changes after discharge

Aim: Hospitalization, the fear of having surgery, seperation from parents, the stress of painful and invasive procedures may cause psychological trauma and permanent behavioral disorders. A nonpharmacological method to minimize preoperative anxiety, modelling based video viewing isa recent practice in anesthesia literature. Our study aims to evaluate the effect of informative video viewing in children considering their anxiety during anesthesia induction and behavioral change after discharge.Materials and methods: Faculty ethics comitee and parental permission were taken, ASA ???? group and 5-12 years of age, 44 children who were planned to take day surgery enrolled in the study. The patients randomly seperated in two groups. Group 1: viewers of preoperative informative video, group 2 nonviewers of preoperative informative video. In group 1, a model in the video was used to inform the child about anesthesia induction, method of analgesia, that s/he should not eat after 12 a.m., that s/he should use the pills regularly after surgery. In group 2, the patients were informed verbally; not by the use of preoperative video viewing. During the anesthesia induction, the patients? anxiety was evaluated by the use of ?Modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale?. The patients? behavioral change after discharge was evaluated by the use of ?Posthospitalisation Behavioral Questionniare?.Results: It was set that informative video viewing based on modelling minimized the anxiety in children during the anesthesia induction and they had less negative behavioral change after discharge compared to the nonviewers.Conclusion: It has been concluded that video viewing based on modelling is an effective way to diminish preoperative anxiety and posthospitalisation negative behavioral change as a nonpharmacological premedication method.Keywords: Preoperative anxiety, modelling, video viewing, behavioral changes.
