Abstract (EN)

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of lavender aromatherapy on pain during vascular access in hemodialysis patients. Materials and Methods: This research; The study was carried out with 90 patients who were randomized controlled and experimental type and received dialysis treatment via arteriovenous fistula intervention in an education research hospital and a private dialysis center between 20-August / 30-September-2019. Data were collected by using the Patient Identification Form, Verbal Category Scale (SCI) and Visual Comparison Scale (VAS). In the evaluation of the data, IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) was calculated with the help of the package program. For numerical data, Shapiro-Wilk test was used to test suitability for normal distribution. Intergroup variance analysis was performed for variables with normal distribution. For variables with multiple measurements, variance analysis with repeated measures in the case of normal distribution, and non-parametric method Brunner-Langer model (F1-LD-F1 design) was used for variables that did not show normal distribution. Results: The mean age of the participants was 56.9 ± 15.3 years, 54.5% were women, 51.1% were married, 40% were housewives, 28.8% were retired and 30% were other 47.8% had primary education, 45.5% had HD treatment for 13 months-5 years, 87.8% had no kidney disease in the family, and 54.4% had no other chronic diseases. , 37.7% were diagnosed as HT. The mean pain score of HD patients in the study group was 57.58 ± 20.28 in the application group and 48.53 ± 20.23 in the control group, in the post-application group 19.49 ± 15.66 and the control group was 45.33 ± 25.52 (p <0.005). The mean pain score after lavender oil application was 22.66 ± 15.35 in the inhaler lavender group, 16.33 ± 15.97 in the topical lavender group, 45.33 ± 25.52 in the control group, 24 ± 15.16 in the inhaler lavender group, 41.16 ± 16.27 in the topical lavender group, 45.33 ± 25.52 after the first placebo application. Conclusion: In our study, it was found that the mean pain score of hemodialysis patients before lavender oil application was higher and there was a significant decrease in the pain severity experienced by HD patients during the access to vein by inhaler and topical lavender oil application. It was concluded that lavender oil applied inhaled and topically did not cause any adverse effects in the patients and could be easily applied for pain control during AVF intervention.
