Effect of disease perception of hemodialysis patients on diet and fluid restriction

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a chronic disease requiring adherence to a treatment regime. In hemodialysis (HD) patients, diet and fluid restriction are important points of treatment management. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the disease perception of hemodialysis patients on diet and fluid restriction. The population of the research consisted of 200 hemodialysis patients who were aged between 18 and 65 years and were receiving hemodialysis treatment at Kastamonu Teaching and Research Hospital or the Anadolu Dialysis Center. Data was collected by face to face interview between December 2022 and March 2023. A Personal Information Form, a Sociodemographic Information Form, a Hemodialysis Patients' Fluid Control Scale (HPFCS), a Hemodialysis Patients' Diet Information Scale (HPDIS), a Hemodialysis Patients' Diet Behavior Scale (HPDBS) and the Brief Illness Perceptions Scale (BPIS) were used to collect data. In the data analysis, means, standard deviations, minimum-maximum, Spearman correlation, the Mann- Whitney U test and Kruskall Wallis H test analysis were used. Significant positive relations were found between the Behavior subscale score of the HPFCS and the HPDBS and HPDBS (r=0.176; p<0.05, r=0.159; p<0.05), and between the Attitude sub-scale and the HPDBS (r=0.146; p<0.05). No relations were found between BIPS and HPFCS or between HPDIS and HPDBS (p>0.05). According to these results, first, hemodialysis patients' disease perceptions can be determined, then their knowledge levels concerning diet and fluid restriction can be increased and their adherence to the treatment regime can be improved.
