The effect of nurses' perceptions of leadership effectiveness on job satisfaction

Abstract (EN)

Aim: This study was made to examine the effect of nurses' perceptions of leadership effectiveness on their job satisfaction. Introduction: Determining the effect of leadership effectiveness on results continues to arouse interest in the literature. However, there is still a large gap in this regard. Most studies have attempted to identify the personal qualities and characteristics of leaders that contribute to their effectiveness and how the leader is perceived, but research on the possible consequences of leader effectiveness is limited. Material and Method: In this cross-sectional and descriptive study, 290 nurses working at Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital was voluntarily participated. Data was obtained by using information form, the Leader Effectiveness Scale-LES (one-dimensional) and Job Satisfaction Scale-JSS. In the analysis of the research data, descriptive statistical analyzes, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and correlation (Spearman test) were used. Results: The average age of the nurses was 34,20±6,20, 52,1% of them were in the 30-39 age range and 80,7% of them were women. In this study, the mean score of the LES was calculated as 13,37±2,41 and the mean score of the JSS was 102,18±13,45. The relationship between the way of working, working conditions, liking the profession, being satisfied with a superior manager, finding the salary sufficient and the total score of the leader effectiveness scale was found statistically significant (p<0,05). It was also determined that the relationship between working conditions, liking the profession and all sub-dimentions of job satisfaction scale was statistically significant (p<0,05). A positive and significant relationship was found between the total scores of leader effectiveness scale and job satisfaction scale (p<0,05). Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, a significant relationship was found between the mean LES and JSS. Executive nurses are recommended to organize leadership activities to ensure nurses' job satisfaction. Keywords: Leader effectiveness, Job satisfaction, Nursing.
