A linguistic comparison between Qur'anic exegeses of Ibn 'Atiyyah and Abu Hayyan al-Andalusi -In the specific to Surah Al-Baqarah-

Since the birth of Islam, there are many authors and works that have been working on the sciences of the Qur'an. The aim of these studies is to ensure that the Qur'an, which is the main source of Islam, is understood in the most accurate way. Studies on the sciences of the Qur'an were not limited to Makkah and Medinah, the origins of Islam, but were also carried out in other centres included in the Islamic lands. Andalus, which carried the flag of Islam in the West, was one of these centres. Actually, Andalus was the origin of many important scientists and scholars in several branches of science, such as religious sciences, philosophy, astronomy, and medicine. Ibn Atiyyah and Abu Hayyân, are among the Qur'anic commentators who were born, grew up and well recognized in Andalus, and both of them also used grammar in their exegesis. The aim of this dissertation is to compare between these two commentators in the exegesis of Surah Al-Baqarah particularly from a linguistic view. This study consists of two parts: In the first part, general information about the lives, works, methods, and sources of both commentators in their exegesis were considered. In the second part, which forms the basis of the study, a grammatical comparison was made between Ibn Atiyyah's al-Muharrar al-wajiz and Abu Hayyân's al-Bahr al-Muhit commentaries of 'Surah Al-Baqarah'. In this comparison, the overlapping and conflicting views of both commentators were tried to be analytically analysed. The study concludes that Both Ibn Atiyyah and Abu Hayyan were able to accept different, strict and conservative ideas, but Abu Hayyan was more accepting than Ibn Atiyyah. Ibn Atiyyah and his work Al-Muharrar al-Wajiz are among the sources of Abu Hayyan in his exegesis of al-Bahr al-Muhit. Abu Hayyan occasionally quoted Ibn Atiyyah to support his opinions, and stated that he agreed with his views. Other times, he criticized Ibn Atiyyah after these quotations. Sometimes it was normal criticism by stating the aspects they disagreed with. But at other times, the level of these criticisms can be very harsh. Also, there were many times in which Abu Hayyan clarified the issue or corrected the deficiencies by explaining the points he quoted from Ibn Atiyyah.
