A comparative example of the use of mobile applications in learning within the context of communication relationship: Comparison of English and Arabic applications

This study aims to comparatively examine the communicative role of digital language learning applications in the Arabic and English learning processes in the context of communication. This research focuses on Mondly and Busuu platforms and analyzes the communication strategies, user experience and language learning processes of these applications in language teaching. From the perspective of communication sciences, how digital tools carry out language learning and the communicative elements in this process are discussed. In the study, the language teaching approaches of both platforms are examined using in-app content analysis and comparative methodology. The structural complexity of Arabic (e.g., root system and formal/informal distinctions of address) and the diversity in the global use of English are associated with the communicative design of the applications. The findings show that digital language learning platforms provide significant advantages in terms of providing contextual learning and interactive experiences in terms of communication. While Busuu meets the social interaction needs of users with its community-based feedback feature, Mondly supports daily communication practices with virtual reality scenarios. The similar and different aspects of these applications, which are alternatives to each other, are tried to be revealed in this study. This study provides a general framework for how technology can make language learning more inclusive and context-sensitive, while highlighting the potential of digital language learning tools in increasing communicative competence. In particular, the importance of the harmony between the structural features of the language and communicative needs is discussed, and suggestions for digital design are attempted to be developed in this direction. The study aims to reveal the necessity of an interdisciplinary dialogue between the fields of communication sciences and digital education.
