Effect of primary education second grade mathematics lesson curriculum to students? problem solving attitudes and skills

The aim of this study is to determine how the curriculum affects the primary school second level students? problem solving attitudes, their perceptions, how it affects their problem solving success and their ability of using problem solving phases.In the educational year 2008 - 2009 in Elazığ city in a boarding district primary school, in which the researcher has been working for 4 years, second level students has been applied a questionnaire named ?Problem Solving Attitude Scale? at the beginning and at the end of the year. With this, the effect of the curriculum on the attitudes of the students is analyzed item by item. It is designated that mathematics curriculum affects attitudes of students positive a little but this is not at enough level.Problems which are suitable with the subjects in the curriculum named ?6th, 7th and 8th Class Problem Questions?. These problems are applied as pre-test and post-test. The results taken from the problem achievements present the success condition in the pre-test and post-test, achievement access and are estimated according to the expected success levels at traditional education methods and Bloom?s whole learning model. Generally, it is designated that the success level is between the traditional education methods success level and the whole learning model success level.According to the results of post-test taken from the Problem Questions at each class rank 3 students were chosen to represent good, intermediate, improvable student groups. Half configured personal interviews were held with these chosen students to determine their levels of problem solving phases. Consequently, it is designated that the improvable students have difficulties in the phase of understanding the problem, intermediate students have difficulties in the assessment phase of the problem and the good students are generally successful for all phases.Key Words: Mathematics Education, Problem Solving, Problem Solving Stages, Problem Solving Skill.
